7 Items You Should Not Put in a Skip Bin

Whether you’re going through a vast home renovation, you’ve finally decided to clear out the garage after a decade of throwing every odd bit in there, or you’re in charge of cleaning up a worksite, skip bin hire is most certainly the way to go. It’s dropped off, you pile everything in, and then it’s picked up and whisked away, never to be seen again. What could be more simple?

Well, as simple as it may be, it pays to remember that not everything can be dumped into a skip bin and taken away. While most things – bricks, wood, garden refuse, general waste and refuse – are more than welcome, there are some things that aren’t, and must be disposed of separately.

What Not to Put in Your Skip Bin

Asbestos

Asbestos should never be placed in a skip bin as it is far too dangerous and can cause contamination. If you are aware that there is asbestos to be disposed of before hiring your skip bin, talk to the company and see what solutions they can offer. Some companies have bins dedicated entirely to the removal of asbestos – and this is the best way to rid yourself and your home of it.

Gas Bottles

Any sort of gas bottle or propane tank has the potential to explode if the conditions are right, and this could be harmful to any people,  equipment or property nearby. If you have any gas tanks that you need to dispose of, contact your local authorities for information on how to do this safely.

Dangerous Chemicals, Acids, and Solvents

Chemicals, acids, and solvents aren’t the safest things to have around at the best of times, and when it comes to getting rid of them, a skip bin isn’t the place to do so. Any leaks could result in the chemicals absorbing into the sides of the bin and contaminating the surrounding environment.

Herbicides and Pesticides

Similarly, herbicides and pesticides should be disposed of separately. They often contain very strong chemicals that, if disposed of improperly, could cause lasting damage to the surrounding area. If you’re unsure on how to get rid of any herbicides or pesticides, try asking a local garden centre for their advice.

Paints

While paint certainly isn’t a toxic as acids and pesticides, it still contains plenty of toxins and dangerous fumes. As a result, placing them in a skip bin isn’t an option. Instead, you could keep it incase your paintwork ever needs a top up, or you could donate it to someone who is looking to decorate their own home. Whatever you do, don’t put it in a skip bin.

Tyres

Old types can take up quite a bit of space in your garage, but unfortunately, putting them in a skip bin isn’t an option as disposing of them is hard work. If you have tyres to get rid of, try asking your mechanic if they can take them off your hands, or see if anyone nearby operates a recycling programme that includes tyres. If not, you could always make a tyre swing.

Appliances and Electronics

When it comes to disposing of your old appliances and electronics, most skip hire companies don’t allow them to be included as the risk of leaking coolants and chemicals is too high. If you have large appliances and electronics – also known as white goods – to dispose of, read our post on Replacing Your White Goods here.

Need a Skip Bin in Perth?

Whether it’s a full renovation or a big clear out, we wish you the best with your project. And if you need skip bin hire in Perth and Canning Vale, or just have any questions about what can or cannot go in your skip bin, contact us today!

When it comes to hiring a skip bin, there are plenty of things to consider. You need to know the correct size, when it can be dropped off, when it will be picked up, and what exactly you can put in it.

But one of the most important – and often overlooked – factors is where your skip bin should be placed.

The placement of your skip bin might not seem like a big deal, but a badly placed bin can be a big inconvenience to you, to any builders, and to the employees of the skip bin company. So what can be done to ensure your skip bin is ready to do the job?

Placing a Bin for Safety

Above everything else, safety must be prioritised. If your skip bin is placed in the way of vehicles, in an area where children normally play, or in a way that makes it hard to reach, you could be compromising the safety of yourself, your family, and your neighbours. Before your skip bin is placed, consider the safest place for it – preferably somewhere out of the way of moving vehicles.

Placing a Bin for Ease

You want to make it as easy as possible for the drivers delivering your skip bin to do their jobs. Not every household has an expansive drive or open grassy area on which to place a bin, but there are certainly things you can keep that will make the job that much easier.

Have your skip bin placed somewhere that doesn’t have any trees or telephone poles around – this way, there’s no chance of causing accidental damage to your area, which you may be fined for. As well as this, ensure that the placement of your skip bin doesn’t restrict the access to any utility lines, telephone poles, or electricity boxes that may need to be surveyed.

Keep It Clear

Wherever possible, you should have your skip bin placed on your own property in order to avoid inconveniencing your neighbours – but be sure to check first whether the bin you have ordered will fit. If you are hiring one of our “heavy”  skip bins – 6m3 or above – there is a risk that your driveway could be damaged, and in this case, it is better to have it placed on the verge.

If the bin cannot be placed on your property, make sure to check with your local authorities on their policies when it comes to skip bins. If your skip bin is placed on the roadside, try as much as possible to ensure it isn’t in the way of other drivers on the road.

The Grass is Greener

If you are opting to have your skip bin placed in your garden, be aware that damage could be caused to your grass. While this damage isn’t usually long-lasting, there are ways to avoid it. Try placing wooden planks down where you would like your skip bin to be placed to avoid direct contact between your garden and the bin.

What to Avoid

Just as there are things to keep in mind when choosing the placement of your skip bin, there are also things to avoid. The main thing to steer clear of is placing your skip bin somewhere that makes it difficult for the delivery drivers to drop off and pick back up. They should be able to drive in and out quickly and easily, without running into any issues.

You should also avoid placing your skip bin anywhere that will cause a problem for your neighbours. If you live in a crowded area or a cul-de-sac, take the time to speak to each of your neighbours that may be affected and gain their consent before placing your skip bin.

The Best Skip Bin Service South of the River

Bonza Bins is a top pick for skip bin hire in Byford, and we’re here to answer any questions you might have. To get in touch, visit our website or give us a call.

You’ve got a job to do, and a skip bin company should be there to help you do it – that’s our view, anyway.

But it doesn’t always go that well. Get a bad skip company, and you could end up with a delayed workflow, an unhappy customer and a bill that makes you grumble. Get a good skip company, and you’ll be looking at better efficiency, cost savings, and if you’re lucky, a mate or two who’ve got your back when you find yourself in a pinch that may or may not involve large piles of bricks and tile.

When it comes to skip bins for trade work, there are a few things to look for. We’re going to go over them here quickly so that you know how to sort the good from the bad and get on with it.

Wide Selection of Bin Sizes

You don’t want to have to size up or down from what you actually need due to poor selection. Try to squeeze your rubbish in a small bin and you may kill time and money getting the extra one. Buy too big and it’s wasted space.

Here’s an example of a complete fleet of bin sizes for selection from smallest to biggest:

Skip Bin Selection Desirable for Trade Work:

Good Service

Prompt delivery and pickup, friendly service and extra help for repeat business can go a long way for your jobs and for your customers, too. We’ve heard horror stories of skip providers approaching homeowners after a completed job and asking for payment that was supposed to be made by the construction company!

Decent service might seem like a given for skip bin providers, but you’d be surprised how uncaring and slack some drivers can be.

Have a look at company reviews on Google, websites, and Facebook to get a picture of the service level before you book!

We can’t help but share our Facebook reviews here. It’s a bit self-promotional, but we put a lot of hard work into every job to get this kind of feedback.

Can Take All Types of Waste

The more types of waste your bin hire company can handle, the better.

Waste Selection to Look For:

General Light Waste

Green Waste

Heavy Waste

Mixed waste

Everyone knows how useful a good skip bin is. One place to put all your junk, no matter what job it came from. It arrives when ordered and disappears when picked up. It’s perfect. At Bonza Bins, we’ve been serving Perth with skip bins for almost 15 years and there’s always been a need – no wonder.

But today, we’ve asked the question – can skip bins go beyond hard yakka?

Well, the answers (there were multiple) were almost too good for words. Here’s what happens when people get creative with Skip Bins.

NOTE: Before we dig in, we do have to give the “please don’t do this at home… and please don’t turn any of our bins into boats or anything else” warning.

We don’t know where this skip bin came from, but we know where it’s staying: right where it is, because this pool is awesome.

The Good Ship Skip

It started with a skip bin delivery and ended 5 kilometers into the bay. We’re not sure if this person is running away from a reno that went pear-shaped or enjoying their Sunday afternoon but either way, we’re impressed with the engineering. And the paint job (our bins have the same).

Skip Pong

This is quite possibly the most indestructible table tennis setup ever. Tired of knocking the table over when you make that diving save? No worries here.

Seriously though, skip bins work so well as table tennis tables that about 100 of them were used for a pop-up project around London. See the photo credit link for more details. Game on!

Skip Skate

This one has almost got us interested in skateboarding! Although if we saw this on the street, we’d probably be more interested in the joinery than the sweet tricks being performed.

Could this be the answer to skateboard property damage? Possibly. Just order a skate skip to a problem area, and it will act like a magnet for all the damage skating can cause to public property. We’ll let you know when we get that business up and running.

Some people feel this way about their car, but few actually act on that feeling. We can only imagine this is a satisfying sight to the one-time car owner… unless this is a prank!

This also stands as a testament to how sturdy a skip bin really is!

And When You’re Tired from All That Work

…Grab yourself a coffee from this ‘shop’! Nothing better than fair trade coffee brewed in the same container it was shipped in, right?

This is actually one of several coffee shops built in the Netherlands. The project was meant to make people think about recycling, and the amount of waste people produce. It’s very clever, but we don’t know if we would pop in and stay a while at this coffee stand.

5 Best Times to Use a Skip Bin

Skip bins aren’t just for construction jobs and renovations, you know! They serve those purposes well – and we’ve got a few tips here on how to make the best use of them in those situations – but a skip can save you time and money in a number of other ways.

Here’s our list of the top scenarios in which a skip bin can make your life easier and better.

1. Renovations

Australians love a good renovation – so much so that we even wrote a blog on the topic if you’re interested. Australian renovation statistics are pretty surprising! But if you’re doing a real reno, the waste created is going to present a few challenges in cost and logistics.

Getting rid of waste yourself is an option if you have light waste, but trips to the rubbish dump or sorting facility can get expensive and time-consuming if you’ve got lots of waste or heavy stuff like brick and tile.

For any renovation where you’re tearing something out or replacing tile, floors or wall, most people find a skip bin to be the best waste removal method for cost, convenience, and efficiency. This is why the pros – renovation companies – contract with skip bin companies.

Oh, we almost forgot! If you’re thinking of a renovation, we also have 6 killer tips to save on a renovation in Perth.

2. Moving House

When most people think of moving house, they think of moving belongings. But it’s easy to underestimate exactly how much is sitting in your cabinets, garage and shed that’s simply not worth moving. And getting rid of old white goods (refrigerator, washer, stove etc.) properly and legally can be more difficult than one might think.

Savvy movers will have a skip bin out front of the house where they can easily and ethically (no filling your neighbors’ bins, no trips to the shopping center’s recycling containers) declutter their new homes before ever moving into them.

Here’s a list of ideas for what to get rid of during a move.

3. Spring Cleaning (or Any Big Clean)

What goes for moving goes for the old deep clean as well. Any time you find yourself digging through closets, you’re going to come up with boxes of things that aren’t needed anymore. If you’ve got stuff you’re sure could sell or go to donation, there might not be a need for a skip. If not… well, unless you’re planning on having a garage sale full of dented lamp posts, stacks of old tax receipts and heavily used outdoor furniture, a skip bin may be your shortcut to a successful clean.

After all, no one likes to spend days trying to clean a home and having it end up looking just as cluttered as it did before.

If you’re thinking of clearing some clutter, our skip bin hire in Perth can help. Here are a few tips we wrote up on how to approach a big cleanout.

And if you’ve got verge collection on the mind, that is another valid option – if the timing is right. Read here our list of pros and cons in Skip Bins vs. Verge Side Pickup.

4. Yard Work

How much can you fit in your rubbish bins? Multiply that by eight and that’s probably what will come out of your back and front garden if you’re getting some real work done. Trimming, pruning, renovations or landscaping can and will create enough waste to warrant a skip bin. At Bonza Bins, we take the green waste.

Staring down a garden that’s getting a bit overgrown? Have a read through our spring gardening cleanup checklist. The tips are good for any season.

5. Construction Jobs or Commercial Use

For construction jobs, we may be stating the obvious here. Most construction and reno companies will use skip bins already due to their ability to be placed anywhere, take a wide variety of waste, and leave logistics for the bin hire company to sort out.

But for commercial businesses, skips are less often thought of. Some non-industrial outfits produce a lot of rubbish. Where this rubbish won’t or can’t go in conventional city bins, booking an ongoing skip service out the back can be cheaper than normal rubbish removal.

How to Keep Your Clean Ups Eco Friendly

Construction waste can lay waste to the environment if not taken care of properly. If not disposed of appropriately, it could even lead to health or workplace hazards.

Whether you’re doing a commercial/industrial or residential project, your junk can come back to bite you and the environment – or your front or back lawn – if you don’t dispose of it in a way that minimises environmental risk.

Here are a number of tips to keep yourself safe and tread lightly on the planet.

Look for Hazardous Items

Certain materials like chemicals, batteries, paints and flammable items need extra care and special disposal. You can’t dump them into regular bins – you’ve got to dispose of them according to regulations. If you don’t know how to dispose of them, contact your local council for help.

This could help you avoid heavy fines and stay away from illegal dumping.

To give you an idea of what falls into the hazardous category, here’s a list of what can and can’t go into a Skip Bin.

Sort Your Waste

This simple tip goes beyond separating hazardous from recyclable from general – it could save you time, money and trouble if you save reusable or sellable items.

Put reusable items like dry pieces of wood in separate containers or under cover so they don’t get damaged during your project.

If you’ve got a lot, consider hiring a few skip bins to help you sort the good, the bad and the ugly. This will save your good materials from damage, your bad materials from taking up workspace, and your ugly (hazardous) materials from contaminating anything else.

Reuse

Instead of wasting money on buying only new items, why not reuse existing fittings and appliances? Paint old fittings or give them a scrubbing to give them a fresh look. Think about ways to rearrange existing items to make the best use of space. This will save you money on purchases, and reduce the amount of waste you generate.

Ask for Eco Friendly Packaging

Whether purchasing supplies for a commercial or home renovation, ask if the store will put your supplies in eco-friendly material.

Use an Eco Friendly Skip Bin Provider

Seek out a Skip Bin provider who’ll sort and dispose your waste the right way.

At Bonza Bins, we sort and recycle, we take green waste, and we take every care to make your waste disposal environmentally friendly.

Whether you’re looking for skip bins in Armadale for a renovation, in Cannington for a construction project, or in Cockburn for an industrial job, we’ve got an excellent service for you at a great price.

6 Ways to Save on a Renovation: Perth’s Best Secrets

1. Get a Deal on Fixtures and Materials

Material costs and appliances are two of the biggest renovation expenses.

If you’re savvy and willing to shop, you can find great deals from warehouses that sell overstock from other suppliers, unused renovation materials from other projects and even salvage from other homes.

This ‘salvage’ isn’t cheap and dirty either – most of it is brand new, but simply was overstocked or not used in the original project it was meant for.

One such discount vendor in Perth is Ross’s Discount Home Centre.

They’ve got a large warehouse in Guildford that stocks, among other things:

There are other discount warehouses in South of the River suburbs like Fremantle, Canning Vale, and more – have a look for yourself and get saving!

2. Check out Your Local Auctions

Auctions are another great way to save on appliances and materials.

Held for any number of reasons (estate sale, house reposessed, items simply no longer needed, etc.), auctions sell all sorts of items and furniture to the highest bidder. If you know where to look, you can save a bundle!

Ross’s Auctioneers and Valuers is a good example here as well – they hold both live and online auctions for everything from flooring and appliances to furniture, wine and industrial equipment.

3. Ask About Floor Models

A well-known trick, but a good one! Next time you’re wandering the selection of ovens and washing machines in, say, Good Guys Armadale or Harvey Norman Cannington, ask a sales rep if they’ve got any floor models (sometimes called display models) for sale.

If they’re getting rid of old stock or just making room for new, they may sell you the refrigerator on display for a tidy savings.

PRO TIP: You can save $$$ getting rid of your old appliances too – find out how here.

4. Factory Seconds

Factory seconds are retail items which, through minor fault of manufacture, are sold to the public for a reduced rate rather than being discarded.

An appliance with a minor blemish, tiny ding, or old model can come your way for a big discount through vendors offering such factory seconds.

Various major retailers carry factory seconds or clearance items. For example, Fridge and Washer City offers seconds in their Joondalup, Morley, and O’Connor stores. For online, check out www.2ndsworld.com.au and similar vendors that specialise in this area.

5. Some DIY

Whatever you can do yourself… do yourself!

Avoid labour and installation costs, save on materials by making your own choices, and even learn a thing or two along the way.

The thing to remember here is not to overstretch yourself. Stay within your skill limits – a botched DIY job will cost you more than getting a professional in. Some areas you may want to avoid are bathroom (waterproofing), plumbing (obvious reasons) and electrical (even more obvious reasons).

6. Hire a Skip Bin

Don’t get stuck paying for expensive junk removal once the dust has cleared. Don’t ruin your front lawn with a pile of heavy waste. And don’t waste time figuring out what to do with piles of renovation scrap or junk you’ve cleared out of your back room.

Hire a skip bin right off the bat. At Bonza Bins, we offer competitive rates and exceptional service for skip bins in Fremantle, Canning Vale, Armadale and all suburbs between South Perth and Freo.

Here’s a list of tips on choosing the right skip bin for your project.

Over the past few years, many millions of people have taken steps to begin lowering their carbon emissions and the amount of waste they throw out. We recycle more, we switch to energy-saving light bulbs, and we put our leftover food into compost bins. All of these things are great first steps to take when it comes to looking after the environment. And although remembering to recycle yesterday’s newspaper instead of putting it in the regular bins seems insignificant, over time it can add up – especially if lots of people are doing it.

But some families have taken it further. One example is the family of Bea Johnson – the author of the book Zero Waste Home, which instructs families on how to live a Zero Waste life. Since 2009, Bea and her family have reduced their household waste to an astounding one-litre jar a year. For many families, they wouldn’t even be able to fit their waste for a single day into the same sized jar.

You might be wondering just how they do it – and how you can take your first steps to living in a Zero Waste Household, too. Just some of the ways Bea reduced her family’s waste are:

Just some of the things that Bea no longer finds she needs to purchase once she started getting creative include:

Overall, Bea and her family saved so much money that they were able to install solar panels on their roof, saving them even more money in energy bills.

Lauren Singer, who was inspired by Bea’s lifestyle, began living a Zero Waste Lifestyle, too. Over three years, she produced only enough rubbish to fit inside of a small mason jar. She credits her success to composting leftover food, buying food in bulk with no packaging, and buying second-hand clothes.

So, what can you do to begin on the path to a Zero Waste Home?

Buy in Bulk

Buying your food in bulk and taking your own containers to bring them home in will reduce your waste significantly – as will shopping for your fresh fruit and veggies at a farmer’s market and getting your meat fresh from a butcher.

Clean Out your Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies not only take up a lot of space in your cupboard, but any homeowner will know that opening the kitchen sink leads to a treasure trove of plastic bottles.

Many basic and effective cleaning supplies can be made at home using a small number of ingredients, such as bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar.

Drive Less

While not directly relating to your household waste, we all know that driving isn’t the most environmentally friendly of practices, especially if you’re doing it every day. Instead, try using public transport or car sharing to get to work, and if you know you have plenty of errands to run, try to fit them all in the same day. This will reduce your fuel consumption, leading to more money in your pocket and less congestion on the roads.

Say No to Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are nothing short of a menace to society, and the less you use them, the better. Take your own fabric or long-life bags to markets and shops, and say no to plastic bags. The environment will thank you for it.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

By now, we’re all pretty aware of how important it is to recycle, but it pays to stay vigilant. Place your recycling bin in a prominent position in your home so that it’s easy for you and your family to recycle, and if you’re undergoing a big renovation, hire a skip bin from a company that ensures your waste will be properly and efficiently recycled.

If you haven’t quite managed to get your waste down to a mason jar, our skip bins are available in a range of sizes to suit your needs. Get in contact with Bonza Bins today to see how we can help you.

You’re moving house. You’ve got the keys to your new place and you’re getting ready to say goodbye to your old one. You’ve made checklists, rounded up all of your spare keys, and packed up your worldly possessions, ready to make the big move.

So, where are you going wrong? We’ll tell you.

You’re taking too much with you!

Maybe you did a pre-move purge that resulted in a thinned-out wardrobe and fewer pots and pans, but we can almost guarantee that, if you’re getting set to move home, you’re taking too much with you.

Think of it this way: the more you take with you, the more you have to unpack, and the more cramped your new home is going to be. This is especially true if you’re moving into a house or a flat that has less space than your previous living space. Some people choose to have a skip bin in their old home, throwing out things they no longer need before they move, and a bin in their new home, to get rid of items that they find do not fit once they’ve arrived. But is that enough?

What can be done? Easy – take less stuff! Here are a few things you can leave behind that will make moving home much easier, and much lighter!

Appliances

If you scrimped and saved for months in order to buy yourself a retro Smeg fridge that you’ve been dreaming of for years, that’s an example of an appliance that you should absolutely pack up and take with you. If, on the other hand, you’re thinking of loading up your old, rusting, kind of smelly washing machine, then maybe it’s time to think again.

A new home is a time for fresh starts, and this can include your appliances. For anything that has seen better days and just isn’t doing the job properly anymore, you might be better off leaving it behind and purchasing a newer model to be delivered and installed in your new home.

For smaller appliances, consider what you really use. If your morning routine comprises of tea and toast, then your kettle and toaster should come along for the ride. If you bought a high-end blender and a novelty popcorn maker five years ago and you haven’t used them in the past six months – it could be time to sell them on and free up some counter space.

Your Mattress

When you consider that mattresses should really be replaced every seven years or so, you might realise that you’re due for an upgrade. If a mattress goes too long without being replaced, it can begin to sag and stop supporting you while you sleep. Over time, it will become more uncomfortable, and you could be left having sleepless nights.

If it’s time for an upgrade, designate your old mattress to the tip pile, and consider upgrading your bed frame too. Old bed frames could be donated to charity and your comfortable new bed could be delivered to your new home.

Junk

Not to be rude about your possessions, but there’s a good chance you’re hoarding a lot of junk in your house. We’re willing to bet you have at least one drawer that is set aside for miscellaneous ‘stuff’, and you’re not even completely sure what half of it is for.

Therefore, make it your mission to dispose of as much junk as you can. Get rid of any old wires and remotes that no longer control anything. Throw away the broken nail files and useless batteries that are rolling around at the back of the drawer. Donate old CDs that you don’t listen to because you no longer have a CD player, DVDs that you haven’t watched in years, and books that you’ve only read three chapters of.

Here are some more clutter clearing tips if you’ve got lots of general mess that needs organising.

Ultimately, you could save yourself several trips to the car, laden down with heavy boxes of junk.

Old Decor

If there’s anything in your current home that you don’t absolutely love and that you have no real use for, no one’s forcing you to bring it along. This means everything from the dusty armchair in the corner to the big potted plant that you’re always forgetting to water.
