Replacing Your White Goods: How to Dispose of Your Old Appliances

Large appliances such as your fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, and oven, are known as white goods, and the process of disposing of them isn’t as easy as throwing out an old pair of ripped jeans. If you’ve decided to replace any of your white goods, then you need to know how to properly and safely get rid of the old ones.

Selling or Giving Away

If you’re replacing an appliance that is still in good working condition, you may not need to dispose of it at all. Depending on its condition, you may be able to sell it on websites such as Gumtree or Facebook. You never know what somebody else might be looking for.  (For Facebook, try searching “buy and sell + your city or suburb name”. Groups and pages dedicated to trading and selling are becoming very common!)

If your appliance is looking a bit worse for wear, or has a few minor faults but still works well enough, your next best option could be to simply give it away for free. This benefits everyone involved, as you could be giving a helping hand to someone in need and it means you no longer have to deal with getting it removed properly. At worst, you might just have to be the one to drop it off to its new owner.

Talk to the Manufacturer

For some appliances, the original manufacturer will be happy to pick up their old wares once your new appliance has been delivered. They may charge you a small fee for the service, but you’ll be left with the peace of mind that your old appliance will be in safe hands. Most companies have an obligation to dispose of their old machines responsibly, so make sure you ask beforehand what their process of disposal is.

Contact the Council

Your council may have specific rules and regulations in place when it comes to the disposal of white goods. In order to avoid running into any trouble or breaking any local laws, make a point of contacting your council and talking to them about any rules that they may enforce when it comes to recycling.

In a best case scenario, you might discover that they offer a service that will dispose of your old goods for you, so it doesn’t hurt to give them a call!

Is It Valuable to Others?

Some people make a living out of salvaging useful materials out of scrap metal. Search around online to see if there is anyone in your area who could make good use out of your old appliance. If you’re not able to sell your machine on or donate it to a charity, passing it onto a metal recycler lets you know that your machine isn’t going to waste.

Don’t Lump It In

When it comes to kitchen renovations, some skip bin hire companies allow white goods to be included, while others don’t. At Bonza Bins, we allow white goods to be put in with kitchen renovation waste. Once your bin reaches the transfer station, your white goods are sent to metal recycling, and any fridges are de-gassed to ensure safety. We serve all of Perth with skip bins, and have skip bin sizes that will suit any appliance.

We also like to recycle everything else! Read here about our process for recycling and green waste.

Think About the Future

If you’re disposing of old appliances, that can only mean that you’re replacing them with newer models. While you’re shopping for your upgrade, make a point of looking for environmentally friendly options that have long warranties and a history of good service. The less white goods you have to dispose of in your lifetime, the better your impact on the world around you.

6 Household Items to Get Rid Of Today

When it comes to household clutter, it tends to sneak up on us. We often don’t realise that we’ve been hoarding Christmas cards from the past five years until we open a cupboard and end up covered in them.

Throwing things away can be difficult, but here are seven household items you can absolutely throw away today to free up space and declutter your home. We promise you won’t miss them.

Old Toys / Clothes / Costumes

While we adults might be a bit stubborn when it comes to throwing away old items, our kids are notorious for it. Their toy boxes are filled with games they haven’t played in years and their wardrobes are bursting at the seams with old Halloween costumes and clothes that haven’t fit them properly since they were a toddler.

It’s time to put your foot down – throwing away any torn or broken items and donating anything that hasn’t been used or worn for a couple of years will free up plenty of space, likely to be filled with yet more toys and games!

Broken Items

We’re all guilty of holding onto items that don’t quite work anymore, but aren’t entirely useless. Old, fraying wires that only charge your phone 10% of the time, umbrellas that don’t extend fully, chests of drawers that have units hanging out at odd angles, and old suitcases with dodgy wheels and missing handles are all great examples of broken household items that should be thrown in the bin immediately.

Space Hoarders

We’ve yet to find one person who doesn’t have a drawer in their home dedicated to miscellaneous items. Whether it’s wires and cables from a TV set that you owned in 1999 or remotes for a VCR that was long ago taken to the tip, we can guarantee that if you haven’t used it in the 10 years it’s been there, you’re never going to use it. Throw it out and make some space for something you actually need.

Items Lost to Technology

When was the last time you sat in front of your expansive DVD collection and pondered over what film or TV series you wanted to watch this evening? How about the last time you scrolled through Netflix’s Recently Added category? Over the last few years, a lot of household items have been replaced within much smaller technological casings, so take all of your old books, DVDs, VHSs, CDs and mobile phones to your local charity shop and bask in your newly freed up living room space.

Old Hobbies

You might have been dedicated to teaching yourself the drums when you first got the kit, but now it’s four years later and you still can’t carry a beat. Donate your dusty musical instruments, knitting materials, paint canvases, and tennis gear to someone who’ll get some real use out of them and carry on in your search to find a hobby that won’t collect dust.

Kitchenware

We’re not saying you need to throw out all of your pots, plates, and pans and spend the rest of your life eating from paper plates, but we are suggesting you take stock of your kitchenware. Whether you’re guilty of holding onto discoloured tupperware with mismatching lids or you have well over 50 mugs and glasses for a family of four, it might be time for you to have a clear out and free up some kitchen space.
Most of the items listed above can be placed in a regular bin, recycled, donated, or taken to a tip, but if you’re considering a more dramatic cleanup or renovation, contact Bonza Bins today to discuss hiring a skip bin!

Aussies Love The Block!

Who doesn’t love spending an evening relaxing in front of the newest reality TV show? You might call it a guilty pleasure, but we have to admit that we, along with well over a million other Aussies, love The Block.

With the announcement that The Block 2017 has started auditioning for its newest contestants, we’ve had renovation on the brain. Sitting back and watching as other people try to create a modern masterpiece out of a rundown complex is almost as fun as getting up and doing it yourself!

…And Check out how Crazy we are about Renovating!

So why does Australia love The Block so much? Well, research tells us that it’s because we love to renovate. Whether we’re ripping up our carpets in favour of tiles or stipping off our wallpaper to splash on some paint, a study by Ron Morgan Research found that 62% of Australian homeowners carried out some form of renovation in 2016. That’s 8.4 million homeowners.

That isn’t to say that all homeowners are dedicated $100,000 to their renovation budget å la The Block. In fact, the most popular type of home improvements are more minor renovations, with 5.8 million Aussies (43%) putting money toward small alterations and 3.7 million giving their homes a fresh lick of paint on their walls, window sills, and ceilings. These smaller renovations can help to give homes a new lease of life without the big budget.

Compared to the 43% of Aussies mentioned above, only 17% of homeowners (around 2.2 million) spent in excess of $5,000 renovating or extending their homes – however, this is still 300,000 more than recorded in 2013, which shows that home renovations in all areas are on the rise.

It was also recorded that homeowners who moved into their abodes less than 12 months ago were more likely to shell out the big bucks for home renovations, while those who had been settled into their homes for longer were content to leave their homes be.

Are you Planning to Renovate?

If you’re planning any home renovations in 2017 and you’re wondering what you’ll do with your old floorboards once your new tiles have been laid, contact Bonza Bins today to chat about what we can do for you!

Hi, we’re Linda and Gary of Bonza Bins. Our friends and customers will tell you first – we serve the Southern Suburbs because we love the area. We live here, we work here, and we want to serve our own community.

Why we Do Skip Bins Just for the Southern Suburbs

If we’re being honest, there’s more to our local service than the fact that we enjoy the place. When you take a look at what’s really needed with a skip bin hire, you realise it’s hard to deliver it whilst operating a large company over a large area.

Fast delivery and prompt pickup: Keeping our clients close gets us there quick. Tough to do across town with traffic the way it is nowadays!

Wide range of bins always in stock: We make sure to keep our bins in stock, to make sure you don’t have to settle for less or more than you need.

Advice (What size bin? Where should I set it down? Can you take what I’ve got? etc.): Quite difficult to manage through a busy call center. We find we’re better off serving areas we know and keeping volume to a level where we can spend that time giving advice.

Attention to Detail: Ever had your skip company miss something on pickup? Set the bin down on your garden, or (we hope not!) the neighbour’s garden? We never want to do that – and we want to be easy to get ahold of in case anything does crop up.

Repeat Business: A good lasting relationship makes things easier and more pleasant for all involved.

At Bonza Bins we believe in supplying products which are great value for money. And because we care about your wallet, we want to make sure you’re getting the most out of every dollar spent using one of our high quality skip bins.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide on the correct and most efficient way to use a skip bin. Follow these steps for your next skip bin hire to save even more time and money.

  1. Find a Place on your Property
By allocating some space on your property for the placement on the skip bin, you can avoid any nasty council fines that can be associated with placing a bin on the street.A bin on the street may also tempt people to dump their trash in your hired bin.

Avoid any hassles with local councils or neighbours by finding somewhere on your own property for the bin. If you can’t find any room, park your car on the street and place the bin where the car was.

  2. Keep it Raised
If you’re worried about the bin scratching or marking your driveway or front paving, just elevate it with a couple of planks of wood. This is also a great option for those whose front yards are grassed, as keeping the bin off the grass means it won’t die.

  3. Size Matters
When you order a skip bin from Bonza Bins, discuss size options with one of our friendly staff. We have several options for size and it’s best for you to know which size you need. Get a size too big and you’ll be spending more money than you need to, get one too small and you won’t have enough room to finish the job.By providing us some general information about how you will be using the bin, our staff should be able to ascertain which size bin will suit your specific requirements best.

  4. Know the Dos and Don’ts
Although most of your rubbish will be safe and appropriate for a skip bin, there are a few certain things which can’t be placed in skip bins.Hazardous waste can’t be disposed in skip bins for obvious reasons. Other materials too unsafe to be disposed of in a skip bin include: asbestos, car and truck tyres, liquid waste (paint, oil, etc.) and gas bottles.

Not only are these materials unsafe to dispose of in a skip bin, if asbestos is discovered in one of our bins it will incur an extra fee. So don’t risk your health or your wallet by putting the wrong stuff in the wrong bin.

  5. Pack it in – But don’t Overfill
Use all the space in your bin to the fullest by packing it tight. Get the most out of your bin by treating it like a game of Tetris. Stack and place rubbish in the best way to fill up every nook and crevice, leaving no gaps or air pockets. Pack it like a suitcase to stretch your dollar further. But remember, once the bin is full, don’t continue to pile trash up. The bins can only be filled to the top edge, with no rubbish sticking out. Overloaded bins are unsafe, can cause damage to people and property and can’t be collected by our drivers.

If a bin has been overloaded, the driver picking it up may remove some of the items or ask you to remove the excess waste. They may even need to bring in a second bin, which means an extra cost.

  6. Manage your Time
When you hire a bin from Bonza Bins you can choose to hire it for up to 4 days or up to 7 days. It’s best to think about how long you’ll need it for and make the most out of the days you have it. We’re happy to extend the skip bin hire if provided notice, but it will cost an extra $10 a day or $50 to have it for an extra week.

  7. Talk to One of Our Knowledgeable Staff
Our staff are always happy to answer your questions and help you have the best experience when hiring one of our skip bins.

If you have a big job or DIY project coming up, hiring a skip bin is a great way to handle the clean up in a quick and easy way – but if you’ve never hired one before, you might not be sure of exactly what you need.

With our step-by-step guide to hiring from Bonza Bins, the process couldn’t be easier.

Step 1

Give us a call on 08 9331 7271 to chat to one of our friendly staff members about what you’re looking for. Before anything else, they’ll want to know which suburb you live in and what size bin you’re looking to hire. Keep in mind that Bonza Bins only operates south of the river!

Step 2

Making sure you hire the right size skip bin is tricky, but important. If you’re not sure what size you need for the job you’re undertaking, our staff are here to help. They’ll ask you about the nature of the job you’re doing and what you think will be going in the bin – larger items such as furniture will require a larger bin than general garden waste.

We also have pictures up on our website, where you can take a look at our skips for yourself and see which one suits your needs.

Step 3

Once your skip bin has been chosen, we’ll let you know about the cost of your hire, and also let you know about our hire period of 7 days. We’ll also take down some information, such as your main point of contact, phone number, email address, delivery address, and where you would like the bin to be placed. We’ll also need your payment details at this stage, and any other important details about delivery that you think we should know!

Step 4

It’s important that our bins aren’t used improperly, so we’ll make sure you’re aware of which materials cannot be placed in the bins. Materials such as asbestos, types, and hazardous or liquid waste can cause harm to the environment, and as such are not permitted in our buns.

Step 5

With everything sorted out in one simple phone call, the only thing that’s left for you to do is wait for your bin to arrive! Our drivers will bring your delivery according to the date and location specified during your phone call with us. Keep in mind that your driver may require your assistance and input when it comes to decided on the best location for your bin placement.

Step 6

We like to keep the payment process as simple as possible at Bonza Bins, so unless you tell us that you’d prefer a hard copy, our invoice will be sent to you via email. Typically, our customers pay us via credit card, but we’ll also allow you to pass the cash to your delivery driver on the date your bin is delivered. If you have any questions about our payment options, we can discuss these with you over the phone.

Step 7

When your big project is done and dusted, it will be time for your bin to be picked up. Our drivers will automatically pick up your bin 7 days after delivery, but if necessary you can contact us to arrange an early collection or an extended hire.

And there you have it – your start to finish guide on how to hire the perfect Bonza Bin for you. One phone call is all it takes to get the ball rolling – it’s as simple as that! If you’re planning a project in early 2017, call today to organise your skip bin hire before the Christmas festivities begin.

In a nation that consumes enough to produce over 3 billion aluminum cans every year, recycling is a big deal. Australians take it seriously, and as a family-owned Australian business, so do we.

It goes without saying that we recycle the basics. Products typically associated with recycling include metal, glass and plastics. But what about green waste?

Green waste is one of the largest sectors of the refuse market, with over 7 tonnes of organic food waste being created annually. That’s a ton of material, and if you’re not careful, yours will end up in a landfill, when it could in fact be contributing to our economy!

Not all skip bin companies recycle green waste, but with Bonza, you can rest assured that you’re not doing unnecessary harm to our beautiful nation. Here are the ways your green waste gives back when you use Bonza Bins:

Direct Usage

From our green bins, two types of recycling happens. First, the material is sorted to remove any brick, steel, or other non-organic material. Then, the product is shredded. For garden waste, such as hedge and tree trimmings, the shredded mulch is used directly. Some of it is sold to companies that retail it. Town councils may also give away surplus mulch to home-owners for use in their landscaping.

Organic Mulch

For more diverse “green” waste, composting is necessary. The product is processed, then left to dry before being used as fertilizer. The resulting compost is a natural, chemical free alternative to commercial fertilizers, and helps to produce healthier plants, while removing a huge amount of waste from our environment.

When to Choose a Green Waste Bin

If you have more green material to dispose of than your normal bins can handle, a green waste skip bin is your best option. Rather than requiring a full sort, the material can be delivered directly to a green waste recycler, saving time and money.

So if you’ve got lots of the green stuff, give us a shout! We’ll be over in a heartbeat to deliver a skip. And when you’re done loading it, we’ll whisk it away to where it can best serve Australia and your community.

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to get the last of the spring cleaning done. If you’ve got a big cleaning job to do, you might be wondering what you’re going to do with all the waste.  You could leave it all out on the verge and wait for the next verge side pickup for your area, or you can try hiring a skip bin.

But how do you know if skip bin hire is the right option for you? Here are a few points to help you decide.

All in One Go

If you’re doing a job with a really big clean up afterwards, like a full garden renovation, there may be too much junk to fit it all on the verge at once. You could end up having to make a few trips to the tip to get rid of it all – and the tip may only be open on certain days. All that back-and-forthing can be a lot of hassle and take a lot of time and energy.

Skip bins are designed to hold large quantities of waste – you can hire a skip bin as large as 10m3! This means you can do a big job and dispose of all the waste in just one go. Not only will you have the convenience of disposing of all your waste at once, it’ll even get picked up for you and taken to the relevant recycling or transfer station.

No Waiting Around

For many areas, verge side pick up only happens once a year. This means if you choose this route, you’ll have to plan your clean up jobs around this date. Local councils usually have strict rules about when you can put out your rubbish for collection, often demanding it’s put no earlier than 1 week prior to the collection date. So if your area’s collection date is May and you have a whole lot of mess to dispose of in November, you’re on your own.

With skip bin hire, there’s no waiting around. You can organise skip bin hire any time of year, when you really need it. You’re in control. If you need to extend your hire period, you can organise that and when time’s up, the trash is taken away from you, so you don’t have to deal with it.

Easy and Convenient

Verge side pickup simply can’t match the convenience of a skip bin hire, which lets you dispose of your waste when you want and have it dealt with by professionals. You will have peace of mind that your trash is being disposed of in an environmentally responsible way and you won’t have to go through the hassle of organising it yourself. It’s especially useful for people who need to do a big cleanup, but don’t have the necessary equipment, like a trailer, to get rid of it themselves.

So if you have a big cleaning project on the horizon, why not give skip bin hire a go? Contact Bonza Bins to organise skip bin hire today.

It’s been a long winter, but the sun is finally starting to peep through the clouds as spring comes into full bloom. Flowers are sprouting, bees are buzzing and you’re going to want to be out soaking up the sunshine in your backyard. So why not start the spring cleaning in the garden to help it grow beautifully this season?

If you want your garden looking its greenest for spring, here are a few steps you can take.

1. Out with the old

The first thing you’ll want to do to renew your garden is to remove any dead or dry debris leftover from the cold winter. Remove weeds and any dead or winter-damaged leaves and branches from your plants, soil, trees and shrubs. Tidy and prune overgrown perennials to make room for new growth. Rake up any leaf cover left over from winter to warm the soil and allow nutrients and water to flow in.

2. Give the garden a good feed

Now that spring is here, it’s time to nourish and nurture your surviving plants with some nutrient-rich food. The food plants like best? Fertiliser! Work a thin layer of fertilizer around all your flowering plants. Fertilising your garden will give it a steady food supply: as the fertiliser breaks down, it can be absorbed by plant roots to aid their growth and flowering.

3. Repot and re-plant

Spring is the perfect time to repot and transplant any trees, shrubs or flowering plants which have outgrown their pots or bed. Remove plants carefully and try to keep the roots moist while you’re moving the plant. Once you’ve moved the plant to its new home, don’t forget to top up with fresh potting mix or mulch. Buying new pots for repotting can help add a fresh dash of colour to your garden.

4. New plants

With the sun and the rain of spring helping to keep plants healthy, it’s a great time to create new garden beds and plant anything you please! Why not start your own veggie garden or add some colour to your backyard with flowering spring annuals? The sky’s the limit, so plant as much as you want – but make sure you allocate enough space for each one to grow (both across and up!).

Once you finish all your spring cleaning, you’re going to want to sort out all the green waste from your choppings and trimmings. Get in touch with us today to organize hire of a green waste skip bin for your next garden spring clean.

At Bonza Bins we are experts in bin rental for large cleanup projects. We recognise that many times, our customers don’t know how to handle their clutter. So, here are a few tips to help you solve clutter issues.

Decide on the Desired Outcome

When starting a major cleanup, it helps to determine what you are trying to accomplish. There are as many reasons to clear clutter as there are clutter clearers, but here are a few tips to help you decide.

Dealing with Stored Items

Many of us have attics, basements, garages and other storage areas filled with items in bins and boxes. Dealing with these spaces presents its own challenges.

The key to remember is that this should be reducing your stress, not adding to it. It may be beneficial to enlist the help of a friend who is not sentimental to help you get rid of unwanted items. Let us know how much that will be, and we’ll gladly help with the carry off.
